Standardized method to extract phenolic compounds from Lagerstroemia speciosa L. (Jarul) for enhanced antioxidant activity

Phenolic compounds contribute to the antioxidant property of plants and efficient extraction plant phenolics could enhance its potential. Lagerstroemia speciosa (L.) Pers. has been investigated for pharmacological activities, but comparing activities derived from various parts a key role in developing natural antioxidants. This study was conducted standardize leaves, pods branches L. plant, followed by determination their solvent fractions. were extracted under different parameters such as temperature, pH, type volume solvent. The phenolic subjected fractions assays performed. Among methods tested, best method 50% ethanol +1% HCl, refluxing 100 ml 1 hour time. determined NaHCO3 + ethyl acetate alone leaves with content 150.2 mg/g, 136.2 mg/g 82.9 respectively. chloroform fraction among maximum ascorbic acid equivalent (ASE) all tested. Ferrous ion chelating capacity indicated that butanol had highest chelation same recorded ferric assay an EC50 value 28.2. Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity EtOAc potential activity. Thus, are excellent sources future investigation on potent compounds.
